Obituary for Mildred N. Gilmore

Mildred Teresa (Noe) Gilmore of Milford died on May 27, 2018 at Milford Regional Medical Center. Born November 19, 1935 in Worcester, she was the daughter of Robert W. Noe and Katherine Ryan Noe of Hopedale and the sister of Robert W. Noe, Jr., all of whom predeceased her.

Mildred is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Robert H. Gilmore. She is survived by her children, Robert A. Gilmore and his wife, Mary Ann O’Brien-Gilmore of Milford; Beth Gilmore Caico and her husband Michael Caico of Hopedale; William H. Gilmore and his wife Mary B. Gilmore of Dighton; Susan Gilmore Sito and her husband Eddy Sito of Blackstone; and her sister Margaret Eaton of Portland, Maine.

She is also survived by her grandchildren. They include: Ryan, his wife Alicia, and Emily Berkowicz; Sean and Sara Gilmore; Allyson, Joseph, and Megan Caico; and Molly and Robert E. Gilmore. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Barbara Nargi and Edna Noe, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Known to her large circle of family, friends, and colleagues as “Millie”, she led a full and passionate life of devotion to her family, who were her pride and joy. She also had an extraordinary gift for friendship and made each person feel deeply understood, special in their own way, and loved.

Her warm, charismatic, and fun-loving personality was undergirded by strongly-held values of fairness, honesty, respect, hard work, humility, and always “doing the right thing”. Her grit and resilience, as a two-time cancer survivor, could not be underestimated.

She loved humor and laughter, and at the same time was tender-hearted and cried easily and often. Her blue eyes conveyed mirth, joy, worry, exasperation, and the much-coveted conspiratorial glance.

She was recognized for distinguished service as an educator and for the outstanding contributions she made to the quality of education in the Milford Public Schools. A fifth grade teacher for much of her thirty-year career, she was known for her high standards, caring nature and the deep empathy she had for her students, particularly those with learning disabilities and other challenges. Many of them described their relationship with her as “life changing”.

She was a proud graduate of Bridgewater State University and enjoyed an annual reunion with her closest college friends for over fifty years. She was a 1953 graduate of Hopedale High School where she played field hockey and was named both the “Most Loquacious” and the “Friendliest” of her graduating class.

She enjoyed social occasions of all kinds, including holidays at her home, playing bocce with friends, and get-togethers with her many teacher friends, including most specially Anne Bradford and Janet Ellis.

Calling hours will be at the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress Street, Milford on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on May 31, 2018 at St. Mary’s Church, 19 Winter Street, Milford.
