Obituary for Phyllis Augusciak Smyth

On Saturday, December 15, 2018, Phyllis Augusciak Smyth, age 91, passed peacefully surrounded by her family. Phyllis, an only child, was born August 5, 1927 in her home on Blanchard Avenue in Uxbridge. She was the daughter of Stefan Augusciak and Ida (Kupis) Augusciak. Phyllis was married to Stanley A. Smyth, Jr. on October 14, 1950. They were the first mixed religious couple to be married at the altar in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Uxbridge.

She was the mother of Sheryl Smyth Romasco and S. Alton Smyth, III both of Uxbridge. She leaves 4 grandchildren: Nicholas A. Romasco of Douglas, Alexa K. Romasco of Uxbridge, Allison Smyth Doll of Douglas and Stephen A. Smyth of Uxbridge. She was also the great-grandmother or as the kids called her, GG (Gorgeous Gram), of Zophie A. Greenwald, Adelaide G. Greenwald and Anthony M. Romasco.

Phyllis graduated from the Uxbridge Public School system in 1945. She received a degree from Bryant University in 1947 and took additional courses at Clark University. She was a member of the American Banking Association.

She worked at the Blackstone Valley National Bank from 1947-1951. She then took a 19 year sabbatical to raise her children. She worked as a bookkeeper for Charles E. Clarke, Inc from 1970 -1979 and for Bellsom Crafts as the accounts payable specialist from 1980 – 1990.

Phyllis was a volunteer in and leader of many organizations in Uxbridge. She was a member of the Samaritan Society (now known as District Nursing), secretary of the North Uxbridge (now the Blanchard School) PTA for many years, one of the original founders of the famous Doughnut Sales at the North Uxbridge School, Den Mother Pack 22 BSA, Girl Scout Troop leader and on the Executive Board of the Wachusett Council, GSA, member of the Uxbridge Republican Town Committee, member of the Board of Registrars for Uxbridge from 1970 – 1975 and 2000 – 2005, member of the Polish American Social and Civic Corporation, treasurer of the Uxbridge 4th of July Committee for 15 years, secretary/treasurer of the Uxbridge Town Common Preservation Committee, member of the the Board of Directors for Tri-River Health Center, town elections poll worker for 52 years, past President and member of the Uxbridge Woman’s Club, life time trustee of the Uxbridge Woman’s Club Helen M. Ryan Scholarship Trust Fund, participated in the First Holiday Night “screwing” party each year, member of the Garden Club and a member of the Reunion Committee for the class of 1945.

Phyllis was the proud mother of the youngest boy to become an Eagle Scout in Uxbridge. At age 13, S. Alton Smyth, III completed the required work under the old method to become Eagle Scout #2922.

The family would like to thank Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Northbridge, the nursing staff, aides and especially the hospice staff for their care of Phyllis in her final days.
