Obituary for Patricia M. Lamphere

Patricia Maureen Lamphere, 84
February 5, 1934 – February 25, 2018
Uxbridge, MA

Known for her feistiness and being “somewhat” stubborn, Patricia M. Lamphere, ignored doctors’ prognoses and rallied against multiple illness until her passing on Sunday, February 25 at the age of 84.

A resident of Weedsport, NY for most of her life, she and husband Richard moved to Bloomington, IN in 2009 to be near family there. Dick passed in 2011 and in 2016, she moved with family to Uxbridge, MA where she resided until her passing. A Hoosier at heart, she remained an Indianapolis Colts fan until she was struck by “Tom Brady fever” and, to the chagrin of her family, became a Patriots fan.

With three of her children in the Weedsport Swim Program, Patricia was very involved in all facets including lending her booming voice to cheer on swimmers and hosting parties that would extend into the wee hours of morning for the swim parents. She earned the nickname “Leadfoot” for her ability to break sound barriers when traveling to swim meets and for doing doughnuts in the school’s snowy parking lot – for which she did receive a stern reprimand from the school principal. When not raising hell, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Weedsport, where she put her creative and artistic talents to work for many years, creating breathtaking decorations for the church at Christmas and for the annual bazaar.

Those same artistic talents allowed her to create a rewarding career as an electrical designer working for leading firms in Auburn and Syracuse. While earning awards for her Lake Placid Olympic Center and Syracuse’s Burnett Park Zoo lighting designs, she was most proud of the cracks she put in the proverbial glass ceiling by being one of the few women to succeed in a typically male-dominated field during that time.

A woman of many talents and interests, it was her extraordinary cooking and baking abilities that landed her in the press most often. Whether it was the intricacy of her gingerbread villages, the gorgeous cakes she decorated or the fundraising events she planned and cooked for, Pat put her mark on everything she created. When not in “her end of the kitchen,” Pat could be found playing golf at Foxfire, Dutch Hollow and Meadowbrook, often playing 18-holes on all three courses the same day.

Witnesses to all of Patricia’s antics are her children: Karen (Bob) Schultz of Ocean Pines, MD; Margaret (Chris) McEvoy of Auburn, NY, Al (Irene) Lamphere of Port Byron, NY; Lori Lamphere of Uxbridge and Kelley (Scott Brown) of Uxbridge; and Jean-Paul Lamphere of Bloomington, IN; and nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Patricia was predeceased by her husband and son Richard Jr. A service will be held in Weedsport, NY in late June.
