Obituary for C. Joseph Knox

C. Joseph Knox, 99, of Milford passed away Fri. March 23, 2018 at the Milford Regional Medical Center, Milford. He was the husband of the late Helen T. (Kapatoes) Knox who died in 2014.

Joe was employed as a shop steward for the Hill Food Service in Milford for 20 years before his retirement in 1983. He previously had worked as a type setter for the Milford Daily News for 15 years.

Joe was born May 22, 1918 in Milford the son of the late Clarence and Alice M. (Walker) Knox and had been a life-long resident of Milford. He was a graduate of Milford High School, Class of 1936 and attended Lawrence University in Appleton, WI.

Joe was a WW II US Navy veteran serving aboard a PT Boat. He was awarded the WW II Victory Medal, European Theatre Area Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific and American Theatre Medals. In 2017 Mr. Knox was recognized by the President of the French Republic as a “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor.

Joe was a member of the United Methodist Church in Milford and was Superintendent of the Sunday School. He supported the Prisoner Outreach Program of the church. Joe was a Milford Town Meeting Member, Vice Chairman of the War Memorial Committee and a member of the Historical Commission.

He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching the Patriots and Red Sox. Joe enjoyed reading American history. He was an “artist” in his carpentry work and loved being close to his family, friends and neighbors.

Joe is survived by a son, John J. and his wife Shirley Knox of Sutton, a daughter, Kimberly E. Knox and her partner Richard Souza both of Mendon, one grandchild Amy Knox Wolf and her husband Mitchell of Milford, one great grandchild, Lilly, one sister Mildred Silverberg of Hardwick and many beloved nieces, nephews and a very special neighbor Evelyn Deer. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Albert, Frederick and Roy Knox and 2 sisters, Alice Sharp and Ernestine Phipps.

Visiting hours will be held on Tues. March 27, 2018 from 11 AM-1 PM in the BUMA SARGEANT FUNERAL HOME, 42 Congress St., Milford followed by a funeral service at 1 PM in the funeral home with Military Honors.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
