Whitinsville – Howard J. “Johnny” Hoekstra, 81, of Mobile, AL. formerly of Whitinsville died May 22, 2010 in Mobile, AL. He was the husband of Aiko (Yoshioka) Hoekstra.
Mr. Hoekstra was a Chief Master Sergeant with the United States Air Force Security Service for more than 23 years, retiring in 1971.
Mr. Hoekstra was born Oct. 27, 1928 in Northbridge the son of the late Louis and Muriel M. (Thomas) Hoekstra. After graduating from Northbridge High School in 1947, he joined the USAF. Howard attended the Russian Language School at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. During his service, he had lived in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Greenland, Orlando, FL., Limestone, ME, Biloxi, MS, Denver, CO and Mobile, AL. Chief Master Sergeant Hoekstra served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Mr. Hoekstra enjoyed bowling and was an avid Boston sports fan. Johnny loved to watch college football.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son; James Hoekstra of Orlando, FL., one daughter, Arlene Volnoff and her husband Donald of Mobile, AL. three brothers, Andrew Hoekstra of North Grafton, Louis Hoekstra Jr. of Montverde, FL. and Rev. Dr. Charles Hoekstra of Moro, IL., one sister, Deborah M. Baker of Sutton, 6 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held Wed. June 23, 2010 at 11 AM in the BUMA FUNERAL HOME, 480 Church St., Whitinsville, MA 01588
Burial will be Pine Grove Cemetery, Linwood Ave., Whitinsville.
