Whitinsville – George J. VandenAkker, 71, of Whitinsville, went to his final home in heaven on Saturday, February 23, 2008 after a lengthy struggle with cancer.
He leaves his high school sweetheart and wife of 51 years, Joanne (LaFleur) VandenAkker; four sons, Cary and his wife Kristine VandenAkker of Whitinsville, Todd and his wife Deborah VandenAkker of Grand Rapids, MI, Eric VandenAkker of Grand Rapids, MI, and Greg and his wife Rebecca VandenAkker of Whitinsville; he leaves 11 precious grandchildren; Sheri, Jennifer, Aaricha, Kimberly, Ryan, Abby, Tyler, Justin, Mikaela, Jessye and Callie.
Born in Whitinsville, he was the youngest son of Joseph and Hilda (Ebbeling) VandenAkker. He leaves a brother, Maynard and his wife Irene VandenAkker of Whitinsville; two sisters, Gladys and the late Henry Nydam of Whitinsville and Velma and her husband Tommy Williams of VanWyck, SC; one half brother, Joseph VandenAkker and two half sisters, Gertrude Vosteen and Heidi Williams.
Mr. VandenAkker was a long time dairy farmer who owned and operated West End Dairy in Whitinsville, along with his brother, for many years. He was a charter member of Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church in Whitinsville. He served in the U.S. Navy.
The funeral services will be held Tuesday February 26, 2008 at 11 AM in Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church, 305 Goldthwaite Rd., Whitinsville. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Whitinsville.
Calling hours will be Monday February 25, 2008 from 5 – 8 PM in the BUMA FUNERAL HOME, 480 Church Street, Whitinsville, MA 01588. Memorial donations in recognition of George’s love of sports may be made to Whitinsville Christian School, c/o Athletic Field House Project, 279 Linwood Ave, Whitinsville, MA 01588.
