Shrewsbury – O. Margaret (Frey) Larson, 96, of Shrewsbury and formerly of Milford, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013 in the Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehab. Center. She was the wife of the late Francis F. Larson who died in 1985.

Mrs. Larson was employed as a registered nurse and shift supervisor for over 10 years at the Countryside Healthcare of Milford, retiring in 1983. She was previously employed for many years at the Milford Hospital and had also worked as a private duty nurse.

A resident of Shrewsbury for the past 10 years, she was previously a longtime resident of Milford. She was born June 16, 1916 in Spartanburg, SC, a daughter of the late Samuel Emmett and Iva (Hughston) Frey. She was a graduate of Columbia, SC School of Nursing.

Mrs. Larson loved her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their activities. She also loved birds, watching sports, and traveling with her late husband. In her later years, she enjoyed playing bingo and strived for the title “Star of the Day”.

In her late 30’s Mrs. Larson was diagnosed with Leukemia. She was admitted to the New England Medical Center in Boston and was started on a new medication. After taking the medication for some time and many blood transfusions, she was told she was incurable and sent to a nursing home. After months of taking the medication at the nursing home, her doctor noticed that she was making progress toward a possible recovery; which she did. At that time, Mrs. Larson was one of 101 people that had made a full recovery from Leukemia. She was the subject of an article published in a medical magazine regarding her recovery. Doctors at New England Medical Center who specialize in blood disorders have used it for their case studies.

She is survived by two sons, Francis E. Larson of Manassas, VA and James B. Larson of Milford; a daughter Elizabeth Weisman of Shrewsbury; four grandchildren, Mark Weisman and his wife Wendy of Marshfield, Stephen Weisman of Waltham, Christine Larson of Boston, and Rachel Larson of Cambridge, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
